Over the years Gourock.com has supplied many, many different customized nylon netting enclosures for customers that each have unique needs and usage applications. Ranging from private residential installations to high-capacity commercial and professional facilities, netting enclosures are highly functional for a very wide spectrum of users and purposes. One of the most popular applications for nylon netting enclosures are for athletics and sports training. When people have a need to contain and impact objects within a specific area, enclosing the entire area with netting is a very nice solution. Some common examples are baseball batting cage nets, golf cage nets, and sports facility training areas. Basketball Barrier Net With Poles

The Home Barrier Netting System that is available at Gourock.com is a really functional solution for people that need to block/contain balls and objects within different areas of their property. Consisting of a dependable ground anchor and steel pole installation, with netting panels clipped to steel attachment points, there are hundreds of potential applications for the Home Barrier Poles. Some very popular applications for this combination of netting and poles include barrier set-ups for baseball & softball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse & hockey, volleyball, golf, and many other multipurpose uses. Generally speaking, if you are a person that is looking for a solid netting installation system that is an alternative to a permanently-installed post/cable/footing approach - then the Home Barrier Netting System is a really good option to consider.

A recent customer in Texas contacted us seeking information on how he could utilize the Home Barrier Poles and some nylon netting panels in a way that would fit his unique requirements. Basically, he has a very nice basketball hoop setup on the edge of his driveway - but the way that the property dropped-away behind the hoop was causing all kinds of inconvenient situations with missed shots and basketballs rolling away from their practice area. In addition to the annoyance of consistently chasing and retrieving basketballs that were rolling away, the lawn area behind the driveway was being destroyed and ripped-up from the excess wear-and-tear from the increased foot traffic on it. He tried out a couple of potential solutions, which were a small "catch net" that was sourced from a department store - along with layering some burlap material over the worn lawn, however neither accomplished what they needed to.

Using and installing the Home Barrier Poles along with some custom-sized nylon netting panels was the approach used to get things solved for this customer. The primary characteristics that needed to be considered were that the property grade was quite uneven from one side to the other, and that he wanted to get a fairly wide coverage area for the netting while keeping the overall setup pretty "minimal" as well. But these things were no problem at all to facilitate. The way that a solution was packaged for him included:

different height poles installed to match the grade as closely as possible, which were a collection of 8' poles and a 10' pole where the property dropped lower.
different dimension custom nylon nets that would help alleviate the effect of the slope/height differences, while still getting barrier coverage all the way to the ground.
breaking-up the barrier/containment area into two separate pole/netting areas which would allow him to make the fit and installation adjustments to the left and right sides independently - and to his own preferences.
using the #21 X 1-3/4" square mesh knotted DuPont® nylon netting, with 5/16" Dacron® rope bordering, for optimal longterm outdoor use for many years.

A couple of days ago he had forwarded over the back and front views of his initial installation of the materials, and he reported back great success achieving his goals. He opted to source a package of the netting installation bungee-balls that we have available so that he could make a few more netting attachments and installation adjustments - but other than that he was able to get rid of the generic 'catch net' that was on there and should start seeing his worn lawn recover nicely! Generally speaking, the 1-3/4" mesh size netting is what you have installed for baseball and softball barrier applications. Custom Nylon Safety Screen Nets

For baseball and softball applications, a very popular type of netting product is the "safety screen" net. The typical use for this type of net is to protect pitchers during batting practice, and also in the field to aid in protection during infield drills.

Gourock.com has a good selection of 7' X 7' safety screens available, which you can refer to by clicking over to this page of our site. However we also supply customized safety screen nets as well. There are many customers that have their own framing already assembled, to their own particular sizing and features, that require the netting itself. The most common solution for this sort of installation is to go with a "pillowcase-style" net. This sort of netting design slides over the top of the framing, just like a pillowcase slides over the top of the pillow. The end result is a double-layer of netting that encapsulates the framing, and provides a very dependable and durable safety screen.

Gourock provides custom-built safety screens in the "pillowcase-style" design, constructed to any particular dimensions that you require. They feature the DuPont® twisted-knotted nylon netting, and can be reinforced on the edges with Dacron® rope borders (or alternatively, can simply be laced together with nylon twine). The most common twine thicknesses used for the safety nets are the #36 (2.5mm, 381 lb./twine) nylon, or for more commercially-oriented facilities there is the #72 (3.5mm, 740 lb./twine) for maximum abrasion resistance. Custom Nylon Netting For RV Cover/Structure

Nylon netting is a very functional and efficient solution for a very wide variety of multipurpose uses and applications. Some of the more popular and well known uses for nets focus around athletics and sports, driving ranges, training facilities, and residential protective setups. However, the different types of diverse purposes for netting certainly number in the thousands and at Gourock.com we have experience assisting people with nets for almost any usage that you can think of!

Recently a customer of ours required a covering of barrier netting to enclose their large RV parking structure. They noted that there was a need to protect the RV from leaves and debris while parked seasonally, and that the best approach was to utilize a mesh netting that would be strong and reliable to accomplish their goal. Luckily for them, Gourock specializes in supplying netting for applications and needs just like theirs, and we were able to design a great solution for them and get the netting fabricated and shipped their way within a couple of weeks.

For outdoor leaf/debris installations the recommended netting selection to most highly consider is the 1" DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon netting. This particular netting construction features an extra tar-coating saturated through the twines - allowing for maximum resilience to UV exposure and moisture. There are a couple of different twine thicknesses available, which are #12 (1.7mm, 116 lb./twine) and also a thicker #18 (1.9mm, 191 lb./twine). Both are very popular for full-time outdoor applications and have general life expectancies of 7+ years for the #12 and 10+ years for the #18.
The 1" knotted nylon netting is fabricated in a diamond mesh pattern, typically with a 5/16" Dacron® rope bordering sewn-in to the edges, and according to any dimensions that are required for the job. Some of the most unique custom nets that have been supplied by Gourock have been built from the 1" knotted nylon, and for installations both exceedingly large and also very small. The RV cover-netting had some particular shape/sizing requirements in order to function as per customer preferences. One large net was to cover the sides and top, while another series of nets were required for the ends. Some of the more highly customized aspects of this job include:

Additional Basketball-Shot Nets

A couple of months ago we had posted an article about some custom nylon nets that were shipped out for a basketball-shot application, and you can reference that earlier post here. The product and material has worked out very well for this customer, and we have facilitated the netting design and production/shipment of a new batch of these nets within the last week. The particular purpose for the custom netting is to serve as a side-barrier for a basketball-shot setup that they install off of the side of their promotional van during different events and assemblies. In this latest run of product, the nylon netting was created to match-up with a specific set of tapers and dimensions in order to functionally fit within their installation framing.

The most typically selected netting option for general-use sporting applications, including basketball barrier, is the #21 X 1-3/4" DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon netting, and usually it is bordered around the edge meshes with a 5/16" braided Dacron® rope sewn-in. These are the materials that have been used for all of these basketball-shot nets in the past, as well with the latest run of product as well. Our customer also has 2" steel rings sewn-in on the upper corners of each netting panel, which are used to hook/connect the netting to their installation framing.

Custom "Pillowcase-Style" Sock Nets

We recently facilitated the production and supply of some custom "pillowcase-style" sock screen nets for a university baseball program in Indiana. There were 3 custom nets that were required to be built to fit over their steel framing, and each were to have a central portal with 'sock/catch' netting sewn-in to collect baseballs within. Sock-screens are nets that are generally used for batting practice and swing-training off of tees, and also for close range impacts and collection of soft-toss balls. Generally installed over square-shaped frames, the "pillowcase-style" design enables the netting to slide over the top of the frame, encapsulating it within 2 walls of netting. Basically, the netting is seamed on the sides and the top edge but not on the bottom side (hence, the "pillowcase" description).

These 3 custom nets were constructed to the sizing of 78" X 78" and feature the #36 X 1-3/4" DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon netting. The central portal area to hit into had a measurement of 47" X 39", which is a fairly typical dimension for products like these. The sock/catch netting was sewn-in allowing for approximately 30" of mesh coming out the back of the screen. All edges and sewing was reinforced with the 5/16" braided Dacron® rope bordering.

Netting for a Custom Framing

This week we had an inquiry into providing some custom-shaped nylon netting that needed to be secured within a customized framing structure that had been built. Our customer had initially emailed over some photographs of the unique frame that they had developed for a golf impact application - and then had followed up with some details on measurements and installation methods. After suggesting a few different netting solutions and providing a series of quotes and drawings, we were able to collaborate on the dimensions and netting features that would best suit their application.

Golf impact netting is the 3/4" mesh knotted nylon, and there are two twine thicknesses available from Gourock.com to select from. The lighter weight #15 twine is great for general golf ball containment for closely hit shots/drives. The thicker #21 twine is the optimal choice for high-abrasion applications and as primary impact netting for golf shots. So for the following netting production and usage, our customer opted to surround the majority of the containment area with the #15 X 3/4" knotted nylon netting, and then reinforce the central area of the custom framing with a secondary layer of high-strength #21 X 3/4" knotted nylon netting. All three netting panels were produced in the diamond mesh pattern with the 5/16" Dacron® rope bordering installed (sewn-in) around the perimeter. For connections to their framing they opted to go with the bungee-ball attachment straps that we have available.

Some unique aspects of this particular job were:

custom tapered shape to fit as closely as possible to the 3-dimensional top shelf of the framing
rope riblines installed through the netting panels to act as attachment/connection points
leadline bottom (weighted line) on the primary impact panel net

Custom Nylon Netting for Sports Facility

Indoor sports training facilities are generally quite unique establishments that cater to a wide variety of athletes and activities. Here at Gourock.com we have years of experience supplying a very diverse spectrum of indoor training facilities with custom barrier netting. We have facilitated netting to be installed within very large arenas, as well as more modestly-sized practice spaces. Regardless of the amount of area that is required to contain balls/objects, we have a really great selection of netting options to consider - and all of the knotted nylon netting choices can be produced to any dimensions, as well as a variety of custom shapes and tapers.

The main considerations to account for as you plan your installation of barrier netting for the training space are:

Solar Panel Protective Barrier Netting Installation

There are all kinds of protective barrier solutions that can be achieved by installing netting panels, and the below example is a great example of some of the unique and interesting applications that we at Gourock help facilitate every week. The following thread provides insights into this recent client's problem/issue that needed to be addressed, the proposed approach, the netting solution, and then the end-result. Photos and descriptions were emailed over to our office from this appreciated customer - and this all took place within the last 3 weeks. I think that you'll find this account to provide great context into some of the noteworthy solutions accomplished with nylon netting.

1: The Problem

"This system is installed at a Golf course in NJ. The missing spaces are where golf balls have broken the PV Panels. This building is located down the fairway from the 9th Tee and is wreaking havoc on my panels. Most of the balls drop from a high angle and I believe that placing a horizontal net over the entire roof area will be my only form of real protection."

Baseball Field Barrier Netting

Baseball field and stadium barrier netting is often supplied by Gourock, and every individual installation requires a custom combination of materials and sizes. The barrier nets that are generally produced for stadiums and facilities are typically being used to protect spectators, parking lots, concession areas, and training zones from fly balls and foul balls. Most of the time the barrier netting is installed vertically, for instance in front of the stands or over the outfield wall. However, many times there are clients that have a situation that requires a horizontal barrier, similar to a "roof" made of netting. Gourock.com supplies customized netting panels that are installed in this fashion quite frequently.

Generally speaking, netting panels are most efficiently installed within the structural area by being clipped/connected to a series of wires/cables that are tensioned between the support posts. The most recommended approach to to have wires or cables tensioned between the support structures in a way that creates a full-perimeter to clip the borders of the netting panel to. The same approach is used for both vertically-hung nets as well as horizontally-hung netting panels. The end result will be an even distribution of weight around the entire perimeter, as well as keeping the netting as "sag-free" as possible after it's clipped up.

For baseball and softball facilities, the most typically selected netting mesh size for barrier netting installations is a 1-3/4" diamond mesh pattern. The most commonly selected twine thicknesses are the #21 (2.0mm) and the thicker/stronger #36 (2.5mm) twine. From our experience, it's pretty much a 50/50 on which twine thickness that people go for, and they are both very functional and durable. The primary decision factors are often personal preference on the visual nature of the installation, preference on tensile strength, and budget. Netting panels can be provided by Gourock to any particular dimensions, and also most shapes. The materials used are DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon netting, and 5/16" braided Dacron® rope bordering (sewn-in).

Below are a couple examples of two custom netting panels that were shipped-out to a youth league establishment that required barrier netting to be installed horizontally to cover an area that was prone to fly balls and foul balls. Both nets were manufactured from the #36 X 1-3/4" (381 lb./twine) DuPont® knotted nylon netting with 5/16" Dacron® rope borders sewn-in. As you can also see, both nets have a customized trapezoidal shape and unique sizes/dimensions in order to match the customer's preferred installation area.

A few weeks ago we had a request for some customized nets to be utilized within a unique marketing application that involved a basketball shooting game. There were a couple of different sizes and shapes that needed to be facilitated, put into production, and shipped to our customer's event locations. These nets had some very specific dimensions, tapers, and shapes in order to fit within their necessary area and to function well to catch-and-return the shot basketballs.

Customized Heavy-Duty Impact Netting

When netting is installed for the purpose of hitting, driving, or shooting objects directly into, the term 'impact netting' is most typically used to classify the application. For instance, a net that is hung-up with the intention of catching golf balls that a person is driving into it from a relatively short distance. Or, when a netting panel is installed in order to function as a impact barrier for catching and dropping baseballs hit from a tee or during soft-toss training. There are lots of different applications in which netting can be considered functioning as an 'impact net', and you can generally assume that the following characteristics will apply:

the mesh size of the netting is correct for close-range and full velocity impacts
the twine thickness is suitable for the amount of expected continuous abrasion
the netting panel is installed in a fashion that allows for proper 'sag' in the material to account for displacement and to avoid rebound

Essentially, any of the netting options that are supplied by Gourock.com can theoretically be used and classified as an 'impact net'. Consider the situation where somebody may be hitting wiffle-balls or foam training balls. Obviously the abrasion of lightweight objects like these is pretty much a non-issue, so in that situation a relatively thin twine thickness can easily be selected - and the primary consideration would be using the proper mesh size to block the objects. Alternatively, consider the opposite end of the spectrum where a university or high-traffic facility requires an impact net to catch and block discuses and shot-puts. This is obviously a high-abrasion and traffic application that will require a thick/strong netting twine (in the proper mesh size) to maximize the functional usage of the netting. So all-in-all, an 'impact net' has the purpose of being the primary barrier and blockade for blocking/dropping directly hit objects - and the selection for which netting choice is best suitable for the application simply follows the 3 bullet points noted above.

Latest Custom Netting Enclosures

Custom netting enclosures are basically 3-dimensional netting productions that are primarily intended to contain objects within a particular surrounding area. They are most commonly referred to as "batting cage nets" or "golf cage nets", however Gourock.com provides netting enclosures that are used for a huge variety of applications including aviary/bird uses, multisport applications including cricket/lacrosse/field-hockey, animal control, and other unique purposes. The most typical customized netting enclosures are produced and provided for commercial sports facilities, for indoor/outdoor areas that have installation structures built to a specific size, and for clients that really need some unique features integrated into the final netting design.

Custom netting enclosures are supplied from Gourock.com built from the highest-quality DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon Netting. They are seamed together using extraordinarily strong Dacron® ropes, and are generally ready to install right when they're removed from the delivered package. The two mesh sizes that are available are 3/4" mesh and 1-3/4" mesh. Twine thicknesses that are available to be quoted our range from the 1.8mm (#15) all the way up to the 3.5mm (#72). Custom Tapered Netting Panels

Custom netting panels are consistently requested by our customers, and often the types of installations that require netting barriers need features like tapered shapes. Many times the tapers are necessary to line-up with the installation cables, or support structures. There are many different uses for custom nets, and most often the tapered shapes seem to be pretty common for baseball/softball backstops, stadium barrier nets, and spectator/bleacher protection netting. Tapered and angled netting panels have a couple of material/mfg. requirements - mainly being that the twisted-knotted nylon netting in a diamond mesh pattern is the only functional material/mesh available to have tapers created from, and also that the installation of a rope bordering to the perimeter of the netting will hold the mesh to its intended shape and dimensions.

Here is a series of recent custom netting examples that were quoted, supplied, and shipped to customers. These all feature some form of tapered shape within the job, and may aid in your research into custom nylon netting options that are available through Gourock.com.

Example 1:

This is a fairly basic triangular-shaped netting panel that was supplied to a customer that needed this shape to install over the corner of a tennis court. This net is installed horizontally over one corner of the fencing that surrounds the tennis court, with the purpose of barricading tennis balls from popping up and out of the area (the other side of the fence has bushes and a property line). The #36 X 1-3/4" DuPont® knotted nylon netting was selected for maximum durability, as well as mesh size functionality for blocking tennis balls. The netting panel is 5/16" Dacron® rope bordered to hold the tapered shape and make the installation as strong and simple as possible.

Example 2:

This collection of custom nylon netting panels also feature the #36 X 1-3/4" DuPont® knotted nylon netting and the 5/16" Dacron® rope borders. This netting production is composed of a couple rectangular nets that have the intended purpose of vertical baseball/softball barrier netting, as well as a couple of custom tapered shapes that were manufactured to the customer's particular dimensions/angles for the horizontally-installed top netting. Similar to the first example, these tapered top nets were supplied to block/contain objects from leaving the area (baseball "pop-ups" primarily). These tapered nets are quite a bit larger in overall area than the first example however, and were supplied to a commercial facility.

Example 3:

This pair of custom tapered netting panels are also horizontally-installed baseball/softball barrier nets that cover the homeplate areas over the baseball field backstop fencing. There is a walkway separating a couple of baseball fields (one regulation field, and one little league/softball field), as well as spectator stands and bleachers. These 2 netting panels were built to a very custom shape, each with a specific combination of angles, slopes, and measurements. This was a production facilitated and supplied by Gourock.com for a city in Florida, and the city opted for the #21 X 1-3/4" DuPont® knotted nylon netting and the 5/16" Dacron® rope borders. Also supplied for the city was the cabling hardware, clips, and accessories that the netting panels were to be clipped to.

Example 4:

These 4 netting panels were also supplied to a county in Florida. Actually, these are replacement netting panels for a job that was originally supplied by Gourock back in 2003 - and are exact replicas of the nets that were produced at that point. This county recently had a tornado rip through their baseball facilities - which had ripped their bleachers out of the ground and subsequently destroyed the netting panels and cables due to the bleachers being thrown right through the installed barrier nets. Featuring the #18 X 1" DuPont® tarred knotted nylon netting and 5/16" twisted nylon rope bordering, this netting job facilitated by Gourock.com demonstrates the capacity for very large net dimensions as well as very custom tapers. The 1.9mm tarred knotted nylon netting also carries a 10 year UV warranty, making it an optimal netting choice for installations in Florida.

Ski Lodge Barrier Netting

One of the great features of nylon netting is that it can be utilized for a huge variety of unique applications and functions. Because Gourock.com specializes in supplying custom nylon netting productions, we are continually communicating with people that seek specialized solutions for their particular needs.

Recently, the "Powderpigs" Ski School, located at Summit Central (Snoqualmie Pass, WA), needed to barricade some raised decking at their ski lodge. The purpose was to fulfill some safety code requirements dealing with making sure that objects on the deck were properly contained within the area. Due to the massive amount of snowfall that Western Washington receives in the mountains during the winter months, the ski school coordinator needed a barrier solution that had the following features:

could be easily taken up-and-down as needed, in order to remove snow from the deck
was a very strong material with maximum weather resistance
had a stabilized edging around the perimeter as well as connection rings
was able to be produced to very specific dimensions
was within a reasonable budget, and could be produced right away

Gourock.com provided a perfect combination of all of these requests with the supply of custom nylon netting panels built from the #18 X 1" (191 lb./twine) DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon Netting. This netting selection has an additional tar-coating that maximizes resistance to UV and moisture, and the panels were bordered with the 5/16" Dacron® Rope Bordering (sewn-in) which have a 3200 lb./test. 2" steel rings were added to the customer-specified dimensions. All MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) were included so the schools could comply with safety standards.

As you can see from the pictures supplied by "Powderpigs" the custom netting panels fit their spacing well, and are accomplishing their intended purpose!

Custom Commerical Golf Impact Netting

One of the intriguing aspects of handling custom netting supply for our appreciated customers is hearing about all of the unique and interesting netting installations that they are facilitating. Whether its a large-scale commercial facility, a university/college-level application, or a residential setup - there are usually some particular specifics that need to be considered for the netting designs. Fortunately, Gourock.com has years of experience handling the customized netting projects for installations both immense in size, or relatively small and individual in nature. And of course, everywhere in between as well! The point being, we never really know who we'll be assisting next, or what the challenges may be with the netting applications - but those aspects of the market keep things dynamic and compelling!

As noted several times through this blog, as well as on the Gourock.com site, commercial golf netting installations are very common for training facilities, schools, and municipalities. We typically work with the end-users, as well as the contractors that are handling the construction and installation job. One recent job was for a golf training installation at a major university that was being constructed by one of our longtime commercial contracting customers. The end-user required golf ball containment netting enclosures, with additional reinforcements for the high-abrasion areas (to help counter the abusive nature of golf ball impacts over time). A recommended approach for this type of situation is to use the two different twine thicknesses available in the 3/4" mesh size knotted nylon netting.

Taking a look at the general schematic for the nets and enclosures that were produced and shipped, you can see the custom sizing, designs, and solutions for this customer's particular needs and available space. The general containment netting features the #15 X 3/4" (144 lb./twine) DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon netting, as this is a great material for general golf impact/barrier to barricade errant golf ball shots and to keep all objects within a designated area. For the areas of the facility that are expected to withstand heavy-abrasion and more consistent wear-and-tear, the heavier weight #21 X 3/4" (241 lb./twine) DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon netting is the way to go. For most sport/training purposes, especially golf, the areas of the highest abrasion are the back end-panels of the enclosure nets. Therefore, it is always highly recommended to reinforce the ends with a secondary layer of direct impact netting to maintain as much integrity and durability as possible. People will often also utilize a training target of sorts (not available through Gourock, and usually made from a canvas or vinyl material) to add even more function and protection to their training area.

Additional unique features to this custom netting design include: 5/16" Braided Dacron® Rope Bordering (sewn-in), and Leadline (pellet-injected heavy rope) Bottom Edges.

As with most indoor golf netting installations of this size and general design, the Cable Suspension technique was used for the hanging of the netting. We also supplied all of the cabling and installation hardware for the job. As noted many times in this company blog, as well as on the Gourock.com site, using a cable suspension method of installation provides lots of useful features as well as supreme functionality and convenience.

Custom Tapered Netting Designs

Tapered netting designs and supply are a fairly commonplace request from many customers that we service. There are several reasons why tapered or angled features of a netting panel may be optimal, including situations like:

lining up the netting to a custom framing/structure
matching the netting panel to a property or boundary line
spanning netting panels between poles of various heights/lengths
"filling in the gaps" of spaces that are triangular shaped or sloped
matching up the barrier netting with a roofline or groundlevel

Of course, with custom netting supply there are always custom applications - so the examples above are only a small glimpse into the hundreds of uses that may require tapers/angles, but they represent a broad context for general use. Throughout the Gourock.com site and also the Gourock Netting Blog you can view several examples of unique netting designs and applications, and below are a couple of recent ones from the last few weeks for your consideration.

This first example (see below) shows a combination of typical rectangular dimensions along with specific tapered/angled sections. This netting panel was constructed from #12 X 1-3/4" Diamond Mesh Twisted-Knotted Nylon Netting, and featured the 5/16" Braided Rope Bordering sewn-in around the entire perimeter. This particular netting production was part of a larger order of 15 nets for a sporting event in Miami, FL. The net shown below was created to be an overhead/ceiling net that needed to be spanned between a set of posts/poles that were already in place for the event area. This was the ceiling containment net, used to keep soccer balls and baseballs within the overall space - and the other netting panels were used to surround the area and act as the vertical barrier nets.

Gourock can typically supply customized netting shapes like this one, and in order to achieve the proper angles/tapers for the job the mfg. process required diamond mesh netting patterns and the rope bordering installed on the perimeter. These requirements primarily have to do with the diamond mesh pattern having the ability to be arranged and trimmed correctly for angles (as opposed to a square mesh pattern), and the rope bordering holding the custom shape into its correct formation.

This second example (see below) is more indicative of a private/residential need for a custom-shaped netting panel. This net has the purpose of a baseball training impact and hitting net that needed to be tapered to fit into an odd-shaped installation area. Utilizing some very durable impact netting materials, including #36 X 1-3/4" DuPont® Type 66-728 Knotted Nylon Netting, additional "Diamond Shield Dipping", Dacron® rope bordering, and a Leadline Bottom edge - this netting panel also features a tapered shape to fit the customer's particular area.

Customized Netting Enclosures/Cages

Facilitating and supplying customized netting products is a specialty of Gourock.com, and quite often the specs required by the end-user are very unique and specific. As has been noted over the course a various blog articles and online examples, Gourock.com is able to provide netting solutions according to a very wide variety of personalized requests, dimensions, and features. Almost every custom netting project is constructed from the highest-end DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon Netting and extraordinarily tough Braided Dacron® Ropes. Custom netting enclosures (most commonly referred to as "cages") are 3-dimensional netting products that have the general purpose of containing objects within a specific area.

A couple of recent examples from the last three weeks help demonstrate two completely different containment applications that required the production and supply of customized netting cages supplied by Gourock.com. These help demonstrate some of the different features, sizes, and designs that are available for supply for both residential and commercial applications.

First, here's an enclosure net that was produced and shipped to a private customer for a residential installation. The intended purpose for the netting is to be a functional baseball/softball batting practice containment net for a limited space area. Secondly, here's a custom netting production for a commercial application located on a new country club facility. Kind of an "opposite" situation compared to the net noted before, because this one is an extra-large golf driving cage for multiple people at once (as opposed the the small-space single person use on the first net). Residential Protective Netting

Nylon netting is an excellent and dependable material for protective and containment solutions for around the home and property. Typically, people who have a home that is located in a close proximity to a golf course fairway or driving range often have situations involving golf balls flying into their property. This obviously has a lot of potentially dangerous consequences such as property damage, personal injury, and stress.

Utilizing a typical barrier netting installation is a very common approach for a great many people who are seeking a functional protective barrier around their area. Most often, the material selected for general multipurpose outdoor containment netting, including golf barrier use, is the 1" tarred DuPont type 66-728 knotted nylon netting. This material is designed for continual outdoor exposure and longevity. However, we see all types of unique netting applications and uses - especially popular is utilizing existing structures/supports that already exist at the location as part of the netting installation.

Since Gourock.com can supply knotted nylon netting according to any dimensions that are required, including most custom shapes/tapers, you can keep a pretty open-mind regarding the protective barrier setup that you may require. Below you'll see a helpful example of a fairly recent netting panel construction for a customer's home. The purpose of the netting for this particular invoice/production is to aid in protecting the siding and windows of the home from incoming golf balls from a nearby course course fairway. They chose to connect the rope bordering of the netting panels directly to the overhead gutters that were already an existing structure on the house. The gutters provided a 1.5' clearance from the sides of the home, and then the netting panels are spanned to ground level and attached to bottom connectors. As you can see from the photo of the property, there is a sloping grade that the netting panels were to correspond to - so using the dimensions provided from the location, the custom #12 X 1" tarred nylon netting panels with 5/16" rope bordering were produced and supplied to match the particular area. The #12 X 1" nylon netting was selected due to its great functionality as golf barrier netting, lightweight presence, longterm outdoor durability, ease-of-use, and minimal visual properties.

Paint Color on Hockey Goals

The Pro-Style Hockey Goals (HG643) are a very popular product supplied by Gourock.com, and have been for a few years. There is a bit of helpful background information and details on both this part of the Gourock website, as well as in this previous blog article.

The 1-5/8" 18G Steel Goal Frame is very durable, and has a really nice red/orange powder-coating finish - which is quite resilient to regular use and wear. However, after many months/years of use, some people may want to 'refurbish' the visual appearance of their goal framing, due to general abrasion, impacts, movements/storage, or similar situations. "Riblines" and Netting Panels

Taking a look through many of the custom netting panels and barrier nets that are facilitated by Gourock, you'll notice the use of "riblines" running through many of them. The term "ribline" refers to the installation of an additional support rope that is sewn-in to the interior area of the netting panel. This technique is great for specialty nets that require additional netting connections (to cables, framing, or existing structure) due to their overall sizing or weight. Sometimes, they are installed through the netting panels in order to create a 'corner' attachment point for a netting panel that will be running up a vertical wall, and then over a ceiling area. Whatever the situation may be, the use of riblines is quite common and in many times very recommended for long-term durability of the netting product.

As is quite common for most any large netting panel production, the perimeter edges of the mesh itself will typically have a rope border installed (sewn-in) to finish-off the product, and to provide strong attachment points for the installation. 5/16" Dacron® rope (3200 lb./test) is the most commonly supplied rope bordering material provided on Gourock.com supplied nets. This is also the same rope that riblines are created from, so you can be assured that all connection points during the netting panel installation have the same visual appearance as well as strength characteristics.

In the 4 images below, you can view 4 netting productions that feature riblines in their design. Each of these nets was facilitated by Gourock and shipped out to the customers within the last 8 weeks.

The following 2 diagrams display barrier netting panels that have both vertically and horizontally installed riblines in them. The most particular reason for the use of the riblines on these productions is their sheer physical size and weight. Both nets are over 4,000 square feet in area, and were being installed in permanent outdoor applications. In order to have a dependable amount of resistance against wind, and to line-up with the contractor's cables/poles, the combination of the vertical and horizontal riblines was a perfect solution for dependability. These were both commercial installations at public venues.

The following diagram shows a series of netting panels that were constructed as ceiling nets over the top of an existing fencing structure. These nets have a few unique features in them, including square mesh construction (which is great for horizontally installed netting panels), "Diamond-Shield" antifoulant dipping, and riblines running in both directions. For this particular installation, the use of the Dacron® rope riblines was to provide attachment points for divider nets and impact panels.

The fourth diagram that is shown below, demonstrates a barrier netting panel that was being installed at a private residence, in order to protect the property from balls from the nearby golf course fairway. In this instance, the vertical rope riblines were installed at specific intervals to line-up with the installation poles that the netting was being installed between. The top edge of the panel, as well as both sides are all Dacron® rope-bordered as well. However, the bottom side was provided without a border installed, as the customer had a unevenly sloping property grade - and preferred to trim-off the excess mesh to match the slope once the netting was installed within the poles.

Tee Box Protective Barrier Netting

One of the more common applications that golf courses and golfing facilities have for golf barrier netting is for protection around tee boxes, ranges, and parking lots. There are quite a few ways that a barrier netting installation can be accomplished, and sometimes the nets require customized tapers or angles to fit the customer's requirements.

Below you can see the images of the preexisting framing that required replacement netting. The nets that had been up there were no longer functional, and the framing needed to be outfitted with new nets. The purpose of the netting was to aid in the blocking of errant shots to protect people within the tee box range area, the parking lot, and the golf cart pickup zone. Some of the characteristics required were:

resilience to long-term UV and weather exposure
ability to block glancing shots
minimal visual appearance
ease-of-use for lacing to the existing framing
ability to custom shape to match the unique dimensions

A perfect match to satisfy all of these requirements was the #12 X 1" (116 lb./twine) DuPont type 66-728 tarred nylon netting. It features a tar coating that completely covers the twisted-knotted mesh construction, ensuring maximum protection from exposure to UV and the outdoor elements. This particular tarred 1" nylon netting from Gourock carries a 7 year UV Warranty (prorated). A great benefit of nylon netting is that it inherently has very strong tensile strength without bulking-up a lot of physical material on the twines. So a relatively thin twine like the #12 (1.7mm) still provides a dependable 116 lb./twine tensile strength. That characteristic, combined with the black color and 1" mesh size, results in fantastic golf barrier protection with minimum visual properties. And since Gourock.com can provide custom dimensions and tapers, the unique dimensions and tapers/angles were no problem at all.

This golf course facility required 26 of the custom nets to match their existing frames. All nets were facilitated and out the door quickly, and ready for installation and years of dependability. Customized Golf Cage Netting

Golf cage nets and golf netting installations are oftentimes supplied with some relatively standard/common net sizes and dimensions. However, in many instances the particular area or space requires some very customized features, shapes, and measurements. Utilizing the DuPont® type-66-728 knotted nylon netting, custom golf cage nets are routinely manufactured and supplied for a wide-range of unique customers. There are some really great examples of some past netting constructions on the Gourock.com site here. In one recent job, which you can see below, notice that there are all kinds of interesting aspects to the end-product. This netting cage/enclosure was constructed with the #21 X 3/4" (241 lb./twine) knotted nylon netting, which is most preferred for high-abrasion golf applications - especially for impact panel nets. All of the edges on this production are bordered with the 5/16" Dacron® rope (3200 lb./test).

Because of the location and installation area that this netting was required to be suspended within, there are quite of few notable features to check out:

tapered height from the front end to the back
tapered netting width down the left-hand side
3' overlapping netting entrance door for easy entry
"wide-mouth" hitting end funneling down to a narrower containment end

And although all of the walls/ceiling on this custom golf net production were already constructed with the heavy-duty #21 X 3/4" knotted nylon, it's always highly recommended to utilize a secondary layer of impact netting that hangs inside the enclosure at the back wall, which has the purpose of absorbing the majority of the impacts and wear. So you can see the secondary 11' X 10.5' impact net noted on there, which greatly enhances the overall durability of the installation by reinforcing the area of the golf net that is primarily hit into.

Eastern Iowa Sports Facility is a new commercial training facility that has been opened in Monticello, IA that features baseball, softball, and golf conditioning. Some More Unique Custom Nets

Customized netting productions for all types of unique applications are consistently supplied by Gourock.com for many different types of customers. Generally constructed with the highest-end sports netting, DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon, there are seemingly endless possibilities for most netting applications. We have a couple of pages on the Gourock.com website that help demonstrate some interesting examples of custom netting enclosures and netting panels, and over the last couple of weeks there have been some additional jobs that may help you out with your netting research.

Each of these productions utilizes the DuPont® nylon, and each has a different mesh/twine build and end-user purpose. ABOVE: This is an interesting netting build that was provided for a customer based on some general requirements that he had. The usage is as a football throwing target and impact net, incorporating a target portal that has a "sock-net" catch pocket coming off the back side. The overall area of the netting is large enough to act as a barrier and impact net for all different types of football impacts and training, while the target and pocket zone allows for specific aiming and the benefit of being able to collect the footballs in the "sock" netting for efficiency. This was constructed from #15 X 3/4" knotted nylon netting, strong enough for football impact use - and also with a smaller mesh size because they were also going to use smaller golf-training wiffleballs for some other seasonal training. A top rope (Dacron®) with tie-off tails makes it easy to hang up. Basically, a multi-sport practice net with a customer-specific design!

ABOVE: This pair of customized netting panels were requested with a variety of custom characteristics for a nice sports facility in Randolph, NJ. Over the last several years they have had a lot of great use from Gourock netting products, and this specialty netting job was for a barrier net requirement spanning over a couple of small entrance-doors. Also, it was built in a custom white coloring as well, from a specialty netting bale construction of #21 X 1-1/2" mesh DuPont® knotted nylon netting. Generally, all netting options are provided black in color. There is an article in the blog detailing the benefits of black colored netting, should you be seeking some background on net coloring. However, customized netting to a very wide variety of colors is possible to produce from scratch, as long a a minimum physical weight requirement is met (generally around 300+ lbs.). Because a specific bale of nylon netting needs to be created for a customized color, or customized mesh/twine combination, panels or projects featuring these sorts of arrangements have a minimum threshold of production overhead. But often it works out really well, as with these two netting panels shown above. Not only do they feature the unique materials, but were also produced to take into account their specifically noted entrance doors as well.

ABOVE: Indoor sports facilities and domes are a very popular destination for barrier and impact netting panels that are supplied through Gourock.com on a regular basis. And since every facility has a different shape, design, and sizing requirement - the need for specifically constructed netting panels is to be expected. For the four netting panels that are featured above, they were sent off to NY for installation within a sports dome. The tapered netting panels are actually the end-panels to the facility, while the rectangular netting panels with the riblines are the side nets. The way that they were installed together is with 11' vertical side walls, and a tapering 35' sloped containment wall that leads up to the ceiling. So basically, the 11' and 35' edges of the different netting panels line-up together like puzzle pieces to create a 3-dimensional enclosure. The 5/16" Dacron® rope bordering and riblines were clipped to steel cabling that was tensioned with turnbuckles. 5/16" snap-hooks were clipped every 5' or so, in order to achieve a nice and even installation. These nets were also provided in a custom white coloring, from the #21 X 1-3/4" DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon. All hardware for the installation was also provided through Gourock as well.

Safety Screen Assembly Guidelines

The baseball and softball safety and training screens supplied by Gourock.com are a strong, dependable, and easily transportable option for pitching protection and fielding/hitting practice. They are quite spacious in sizing, measuring 7' tall and 7' wide. The nets themselves are built from thick 3.0mm (#60) twisted-knotted HDPE netting, and constructed "pillowcase-style" - allowing them to slide over the top of the framing and resulting in a double-wall of protective netting. There are options for L-Screens, Softball-Screens, Fielder Safety-Screens, and Sock Net-Screens. For each selection you have the option of sourcing a complete package with framing, or the replacement nets individually.

Now, a very unique and attractive feature of these particular screens is the design of the framing. The frames are produced in a high-quality "Hammer-Coat Finish" from 1-5/8" diameter 18G steel. They also feature a sectional assembly with snap-lock pins, meaning that you can easily disassemble the frame for easy transportation to different practice locations, or for compact storage if needed. The estimated time to assemble the steel framing and fitting the netting is only 10 minutes! And each screen design has a weight about around 37 lbs. or so, making them durable and dependable, yet manageable to transport. Popular for many applications including team-use, residential practice, scholastic applications, and general protection - these screens are a really nice option for traveling to different locations with and for both indoor and outdoor use.

ABOVE: This is a customized netting formation that was basically a 60' X 100' "box" created from some Dacron® rope-bordered netting panels, and then topped-off with a custom top-net that was to be installed within a peaked-roof. This was supplied and drawn-up/produced for a customer that was installing a baseball training facility at their own property - and they had a pretty specific request on how they preferred the netting to overhang on the end-panels when installed. Batting Cage Cable Suspension

Over the next few months, wintertime weather often means moving baseball and softball training indoors for many people. Gourock ships out batting cage nets and netting panels for all sorts of indoor practice areas, for both residential and commercial applications. All of the netting options that we have available (typically nylon, HTPP, and HDPE) work very well for indoor use. The main sticking point for many people is the method of hanging their netting or batting cage indoors. You may have a very large space available that you are planning on placing an external framing system in, and then hanging the batting cage netting in the same fashion as an outdoor net. And of course, any personally preferred method of netting installation is perfectly fine - our netting products are great for a wide variety of support structures.

However, may we suggest using a cable suspension method of batting cage netting installation? Using some horizontally installed steel cables as your attachment plane provides some really great benefits:

batting cages are clipped every 5' or so, maximizing the inner volume of the netting enclosure
the netting can slide back-and-forth like a curtain to move it out of the way when not in use
a tensioned cable method is very cost-effective and intuitive
the netting can quickly be unclipped from the cables for storage or transportation

The most recommended approach is to use 3 horizontally-installed aircraft cables that are installed from wall-to-wall or other available and stable support structures (rafters, poles, etc.). The cables should line-up with the 2 outer edges of the batting cage net, and the center-ceiling line that runs down the middle of the ceiling net. The cable should be at a height of no higher than what the netting is built to, however hanging it at a lower height is perfectly fine as well (for limited-space situations). This will provide a reliable installation plane, keep the batting cage net as "sag-free" as possible, and maximizes your available training area.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the same cable suspension materials that you use for your indoor installation can easily be taken outdoors for the spring/summer/autumn seasons. You basically re-create the cable suspension plane between either 6 poles, 4 poles, or walls/trees/etc. The Gourock.com site has some helpful recommendations to take a look at here. All of the benefits of using a cable installation for your batting cage net transfer over to the outdoor setups - especially the "curtain/sliding" attributes. Having the ability to get your netting out of the way is extraordinarily helpful for instances of:

mowing and grounds-maintenance
using the area for alternative purposes when not training
wind/poor weather concerns
minimizing the number of poles installed into the property

PolyPro Netting Panels - Serged Edges

Most of the netting options that Gourock.com supplies are customized panels that are manufactured to specific dimensions, shapes, or specs. These types of nets are generally built with the DuPont® nylon netting options, or the standard knotless nylon netting construction. However, there is another option available that functions very, very well for almost any general netting barrier application - especially those those don't require customization of dimensions/design. For instance, if you are seeking a barrier or impact netting solution that may be considered more "basic" or "general" - the 100% High-Tenacity PolyPro Nets may be exactly what you are looking for.

High-Tenacity PolyPro (HTPP) nets are prefabricated to a variety of relatively common dimensions and mesh sizes. So for small object barrier (like golf balls, etc.), or larger objects (like baseballs, basketballs, etc.), there is an option for you to aim for. HTPP nets feature braided/knotless square mesh design, with a 4mm serged-edging around the perimeter of the panel. "Serging" is a process in textile production that basically fuses a thicker amount of material to the main area. So in the case of the PolyPro netting panels, there is an edging fused to the outer perimeter to finish-off the mesh, and to aid in the hanging and installation of the netting panel. You can consider the serged-edge to be an "in-between" option compared to getting bulk netting or a rope-bordered netting panel.

Another notable feature of the HTPP netting, is how it has the aesthetics of nylon and the UV/extrusion characteristics of HDPE (polyethylene). Nylon is a fibrous material, making it feel and look "cloth-like" in nature; whereas HDPE is a very stiff high-density plastic-type of twine. And while Nylon's production requires it to be dyed into it's coloring and UV stabilized after looming (in typical cases), HDPE twine is extruded permanently black and with the stabilizers right from the start. So where does that place the PolyPro? Well, the HTPP nets are an option that look and feel just like nylon, but are extruded from the start with permanent coloring and 4 units of UV stabilization! And with lots of convenient dimensions and options to select from, these netting panel options may be exactly what you are seeking for your general netting requirements.

Take a look at the images below that demonstrate the #36 X 1-3/4" PolyPro netting as installed on a tensioned-cable with aluminum snap-hooks. You can see how the serged-edge functions very well as an attachment point, how the netting looks fantastic, and how it can be slid all the way over to one end when needed (condensing down very easily, just like nylon). The HTPP nets also install very well with the Home Barrier Poles.

Netting Installation Pole Sizes

The Home Barrier Netting Poles are a very popular and practical way to suspend barrier netting panels, and Home Batting Cage Nets. They feature a semi-permanent ground anchor that augers into your soil, and then the 2" steel poles slide into the ground sleeve. Netting is clipped to the welded attachment hook at the top of the pole with the included snap-hooks. The home barrier poles are not a substitute to a tensioned-cable permanent installation (like at a driving range, stadium, or similar installation), however they are an excellent alternative for installations that:

are not permanently installed into property with concrete footings
are to be removed or installed seasonally
need to be completely removed or moved easily
are to be set-up only when needed and stored when not
are for most residential barrier solutions

These poles/anchors are not used with a tensioned-cable type of design, so they are typically spaced every 10'-12' in distance to allow for as 'sag-free' of and installation as possible regarding the hanging netting. These poles are used all of the time for a huge variety of applications, ranging from scholastic/field barricade nets, to backyard basketball/soccer/multisport barrier needs, golf range barrier, and a host of unique uses in-between.

There have been some requests over the years for specific sizes of the pole-sections used for each of the available finished pole lengths. So below are diagrams that demonstrate the number of sections used, and the length of each section used, for all four heights available. The home-barrier poles are supplied in sizes of: 8', 10', 12', and 14'. For netting installations that require heights that are greater than 14', you'll need to utilize a more permanent installation system (concrete footings & permanent poles) or a tensioned-cable installation.

Custom Netting Application

Nylon netting is a very durable and dependable solution for a huge variety of unique applications. Aside from common athletic or stadium netting installations, Gourock supplies customized netting panels for barrier and protective/safety purposes like: landfills, aviary and bird netting use, pond and leaf barrier netting, warehouse needs, animal control, marine/boating needs, and most every other application that you can imagine! If you think that your particular idea can be enhanced with netting features, chances are that they probably can!

The DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon netting is an excellent construction choice for custom barrier uses, whether they be commercial or residential. It has a very high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, is completely prepared for long-term exposure, and is available from Gourock.com in a wide variety of mesh sizes and twine thicknesses. And of course, you are free to order or be quoted on any dimensions that you need, and often in any customized shapes/tapers that you require. For instance, here is a great photo of some 1" tarred nylon netting that was designed and supply by Gourock for a custom playground barrier installation to protect from incoming golf balls and errant shots. As you can see, this particular example shows not just the tapered and custom-built netting panels, but also another great example of clipping/hanging the Dacron® rope borders to tensioned cables. Choosing the #18 X 1" tarred knotted nylon is optimal for these sorts of outdoor protection installations due to its additional tar-coating that maximizes UV resistance.

Residential Golf Barrier Netting

If your property is located on a golf course fairway, by a driving range, or if you have any reason to require a barrier net to block golf balls from entering your yard - going for a golf barrier netting installation will save you lots of money in property damage and potential injuries. The 1" mesh size DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon netting with tar coating is your best choice for long-term durability and dependability. The #12 twine comes with a 7 year UV warranty, while the thicker #18 twine has a 10 year UV warranty. The 1" mesh size is optimal for barrier netting applications because it performs very well with wind, blocks errant balls/shots, and has a minimal visual consideration.

Some people ask about sourcing a white, clear, or green netting color - with the intentions of going for a netting installation that is "invisible". However, something to keep in mind is that the black color is actually the least visually obtrusive color to use for barrier netting installations, as it 'blends' in very well with the surrounding background and doesn't "stand out" at all (unlike a white coloring, which will be quite visible). And also, black is the most dependable material with regards to UV exposure.

Indoor Batting Cages

Many indoor commercial sports facilities, particularly for baseball and softball, opt to hang their netting and batting cages right from their ceiling structure. This works very well for many netting installations by periodically clipping the top nets of the enclosures to the rafters with a 'vertical hanger'. As you can see from these images sent by MVP Baseball in Illinois, they chose to suspend their Gourock-supplied baseball nets in this manner, resulting in a great and unique training area that utilizes lots of netting within their building.

The best way to approach the 'vertical hanger' method is to use the following materials:

Since everyone will have a different overall distance between the ceiling height of their building and the overall installation height of the netting panels or enclosures, sourcing the materials in "bulk" is the best approach. What you want to do is cut a length of the twine/rope that is about 1' longer than the actual distance that you need for the the hanger. For instance, if your building has a 25' ceiling height, and the nets are to be hung at 15', then the length of your hanger should come out to 11' (10' for the actual distance + 1' of extra length). You'll need to make a loop to connect the snap-hook to on each side of the twine/rope, so the extra foot of length provides enough material far a 6" loop on each side. Then clip a snap-hook on each end, and you're all set to hang the nets! Consider using a vertical hanger every 5'-10' in order to maximize the support and function of the netting.

Using the materials noted above allows for a very strong hanger, a very functional method of hanging your nets, and a fantastic ease-of-use while being soft on the hands (there's no reason to use steel cable for vertical hanging). Also - it is a great value regarding overall cost!

Sports Facility Netting

All American Sports Academy is a great (and big!) training area in Maryland that has some great - and unique applications of Gourock supplied netting panels. Utilizing the 1-3/4" DuPont® type 66-728 twisted-knotted nylon for their custom enclosures and divider nets, AA Sports is a great example of using a cable-suspension method of netting installation.

The baseball netting divider nets are clipped with snap-hooks to horizontally-installed cables, making them able to slide back-and-forth (curtain-style). With this sort of installation you have the benefits of:

opening-up your overall area if preferred
using individual areas for larger or smaller-use purposes
having a durable and 'clean' netting appearance
lowest amount of 'wear and tear' on the nets
minimal installation cost, with minimal amount of materials

A couple of customized golf cage nets were recently supplied by Gourock.com for use on the "Caribbean Princess" cruise ship, and you can check out the photos below. These custom-made golf impact cage nets feature the commercial-thickness #21 X 3/4" DuPont® Type 66-728 Twisted-Knotted Nylon Netting, and were installed for passenger use while cruising along the oceans!
